八幡堀の柳が芽吹き、水郷に春の光が満ちる頃。近江の春は「水辺の桜」が主役です。町なかの堀端から、湖岸4kmにわたる海津大崎の桜並木まで、淡い花の色が水面に映り込みます。芽吹きはじめのメタセコイア並木も、この季節ならではのやわらかな緑です。 As the willows of Hachiman-bori bud and spring light fills the canal district, Omi's spring belongs to "cherry blossoms by the water." From the moats in town to the four-kilometre cherry avenue of Kaizu-Osaki along the lake, soft petals mirror on the surface. The Metasequoia avenue, just coming into leaf, shows a tender green found only now.
夏の琵琶湖は、空の青を映してどこまでも開放的。神が棲むと伝わる竹生島へ船で渡り、湖西では朝の白鬚神社の湖中鳥居が静かに佇みます。水辺でSUPやカヤックを楽しんだあとは、町家で涼をとる——湖国ならではの夏の過ごし方です。 Summer on Lake Biwa is wide open, mirroring the blue of the sky. Cross by boat to Chikubu Island, said to be home to the gods; on the western shore, the lake-standing torii of Shirahige Shrine rests quietly in the morning. Try SUP or kayaking by the water, then cool off in your machiya — a summer only the lake country offers.
秋の近江は、山寺のもみじと湖畔の並木が主役。湖東三山の古刹は燃えるような紅葉に包まれ、メタセコイア並木は黄金色のトンネルへと姿を変えます。新米や近江牛、秋の味覚も最高潮。一年でもっとも色彩ゆたかな季節です。 Autumn in Omi belongs to mountain-temple maples and lakeside avenues. The ancient temples of the Koto-Sanzan blaze with crimson, while the Metasequoia avenue becomes a tunnel of gold. New-harvest rice and Omi beef are at their peak — the year's most colourful season.
人もまばらな冬の近江は、一年でもっとも静かで、もっとも美味しい季節かもしれません。長浜の盆梅展が早春の香りを運び、彦根城は雪化粧をまといます。近江牛のしゃぶしゃぶや鴨鍋で体を温め、湖北には伊吹山や余呉湖の雪景色が広がります。 Quiet and uncrowded, winter in Omi may be the year's most peaceful — and most delicious — season. Nagahama's potted-plum exhibition carries the scent of early spring, while Hikone Castle dresses in snow. Warm yourself with Omi beef shabu-shabu and duck hot pot, as snowscapes spread across Mount Ibuki and Lake Yogo.
